Rice upma, which is mainly popular in Tamil Nadu and southern parts of Karnataka, is referred to as akki tari uppittu (rice coarse flour uppittu). Another variant of upma is prepared with grated coconut instead of onions, especially on holy days, when onion is avoided. This type of upma is generally smeared with ghee at the end of preparation.

Akki tari is the Kannada name for rice rava. I had read many recipes with akki tari, but for the first time heard about akki tari uppittu. Vanishree had sent 2 variations, one was simple upma with peas(in the following recipe, exclude sambar powder and tamarind to get simple upma) and second was with sambar powder.

Main ingredients - rice rava upma - akki tari uppittu rice rava - akki tari Ingredients for rice rava upma to make 3-4 servings. Rice Rava - 1 cup Onion - 1 large Tomato - 1 large Water - 2 1/2 cups, more as needed. Salt - 1 1/2 tsp or to taste Sugar - 1/2 tsp Fresh grated coconut - 2 tbsp Coriander leaves - 1 small bunch

Method: Heat oil ghee add mustard,when it starts popping, add red chillies, urad daal, chana daal ,cashew nuts and curry leaves. Now add onion, chopped ginger and green chillies. Fry till onions turn slightly brownish. Add green peas, tamarind, rice rava and fry for 5-6 minutes or till the rava is well roasted.
