Purple/Blue Disc and PS2 drive questions. I bought 3 more games at a local game shop and the person running it asked me if I had a fat or slim PS2, and I did mention that I have a fat PS2 and mentioned that purple/blue discs cannot be read in the earlier PS2s because of the laser, with exception of the third version and all slim models.

Black discs (actually dark purple) are PS1 discs. Blue discs are PS2 CD-ROMs, and were released all through the life of the system if a game was 700 MB or less. Silver discs are DVD-ROM (single layer), and gold discs are DVD-ROM (dual layer). The PS2 optical drive has 2 lasers, one for CD and one for DVD.

Re: My PS2 won\'t play discs with purple backs?!? Basically, it'll play all the DVD games but not the regular CD games. You could take it apart and clean it, but that would void the warranty if you still have one. A person from work had a similar problem, but his PS2 wouldn't read either (CD and DVD).

The PS2 uses two different lasers for blue discs (CD-ROMs) and silver discs (DVD-ROMs). So no, it doesn't make the laser "work harder".
